Suggestion for Praying
G-R-A-S-P-ing the Lord in Prayer
In Matthew chapter 6, our Lord teaches us to pray, and demonstrates different elements of effective communication with God, These elements can be remembered by using the acrostic G-R-A-S-P.
GLORIFY
Jesus started by praying “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your Name!” He glorified God the father before He prayed anything else. Our prayer life will be more effective if we begin praying by glorifying God for Who He Is and what He’s done.
REPENT
Jesus said that we should pray “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Unconfessed sin will hinder our prayers and communion with God. Take a moment to the God’s Spirit search your heart and show you any unconfessed sin in your life, and repent of that sin.
ASK
“Give us today our daily bread.” The Lord wants us to ask Him to provide for all our needs and to provide us with guidance, strength, wisdom and peace. Bring all your requests to Him. Make requests on behalf of others.
SURRENDER
“Your Kingdom come, Your will be done.” Effective prayer requires that we surrender our wills to His. Underscore every concern and request with an attitude of surrender, and a desire for His will above all else.
PRAISE
Jesus concluded His “demonstration prayer” by saying “For Yours is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever, Amen.” Just as He began His prayer by glorifying God the Father, He ends is by praising God the Father, teaching us to sandwich our prayers with glorification and praise!
